FAQs

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which was first identified in late 2019. It primarily affects the respiratory system but has been shown to impact multiple organs in severe cases. The virus quickly spread worldwide, resulting in a global pandemic and unprecedented public health measures. While many cases are mild or asymptomatic, COVID-19 can lead to serious illness, hospitalisation, and death, especially in older adults and individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and respiratory illnesses. The severity of the disease can vary significantly between individuals, with some recovering quickly and others experiencing long-lasting symptoms, commonly referred to as Long COVID. The widespread development and deployment of vaccines, combined with improved treatments and natural immunity from previous infections, have dramatically reduced the rates of severe illness and death in many parts of the world.

COVID-19 spreads from person to person mainly through respiratory droplets released when an infected individual coughs, sneezes, speaks, or breathes. It can also be transmitted via smaller aerosol particles in enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces. While surface transmission is considered less common, it is still possible if a person touches a contaminated surface and then touches their face. Preventing the spread involves a combination of strategies including vaccination, maintaining good hand hygiene, wearing masks in crowded or enclosed settings, improving ventilation, and practising social distancing when necessary. During high transmission periods or when new variants emerge, additional precautions such as working from home or limiting social contact may be advised. Individuals with symptoms or those who test positive are advised to stay at home and avoid contact with others to prevent onward transmission.

COVID-19 symptoms can vary widely from one person to another. Common early symptoms include fever, dry cough, sore throat, fatigue, and loss or change to the sense of taste or smell. Other reported symptoms include headache, muscle aches, nasal congestion, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhoea or nausea. In more severe cases, individuals may develop pneumonia, difficulty breathing, or oxygen desaturation, requiring hospitalisation. Some people may experience rapid deterioration, particularly around the second week of illness. Additionally, a subset of individuals develop Long COVID, where symptoms such as extreme fatigue, cognitive issues, breathlessness, and palpitations persist for weeks or months after the initial infection has resolved. The presentation of symptoms may differ depending on the variant in circulation and the individual’s vaccination status or level of immunity.

We will have choice of three vaccines, however due to supply demands and issues we will source the best available vaccine for your appointment.

COVID-19 vaccines offer strong protection against severe illness, hospitalisation, and death, although the level of protection against infection may wane over time. Initial vaccine courses usually consist of two doses, with additional booster doses offered at intervals to sustain immunity. The duration of protection depends on several factors, including the vaccine type, the individual’s age, health status, and the emergence of new variants. In the UK, seasonal booster campaigns now target the most vulnerable groups, such as those aged over 65, residents in care homes, frontline health and social care workers, and people with certain underlying health conditions. For the general population, booster doses may not be required annually but could be recommended in future depending on public health guidance and the behaviour of the virus.

Many countries previously required proof of COVID-19 vaccination or a recent negative test result as a condition for entry, especially at the height of the pandemic. As of now, most countries have relaxed or removed these entry requirements, although rules can change quickly if new variants arise or transmission rates spike. Travellers are strongly advised to check the specific entry requirements of their destination country, as some may still require vaccination or testing for certain groups. In addition, proof of vaccination may still be requested in certain settings such as hospitals, care homes, or at large public events in some regions. Being fully vaccinated is not only useful for travel but also offers personal protection against serious illness while abroad.

COVID-19 vaccines are generally safe and effective, with millions of doses administered globally. Most people experience mild and short-lived side effects such as pain or swelling at the injection site, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, or mild fever. These symptoms usually resolve within 48 hours. Some individuals may experience a slightly stronger response after the second or third dose, particularly younger people, whose immune systems tend to be more reactive. Rare but serious side effects have been reported, including allergic reactions, myocarditis (inflammation of the heart), or blood clotting events, depending on the vaccine type. However, these remain extremely uncommon and are closely monitored by regulatory bodies. For the vast majority of individuals, the benefits of vaccination in preventing severe COVID-19 far outweigh the risks of side effects, and the vaccines remain a cornerstone of public health strategy.
