Altitude Sickness Treatment
We provide a full range of travel vaccinations and medication
Prevention and Treatment -18 years and over
Taking Acetazolamide tablets will assist with acclimatisation. 125mg twice daily to be commenced 1 day prior to ascent and continued for 2 days once acclimatised to the high altitude or once descent has begun.
Once acclimatised, treatment should be discontinued unless early symptoms of altitude sickness appear, and other treatment options have failed.
What do I do if I have altitude sickness?
If experiencing altitude sickness, remain at current altitude for 1-2 days, avoiding exertion and ensuring hydration. Avoid alcohol and smoking as they may exacerbate symptoms. Use over-the-counter painkillers and antiemetics if needed. Communicate your condition to fellow travellers and refrain from ascending until fully recovered. Descend if symptoms persist beyond a day or worsen. Consider acetazolamide for expedited recovery. Resume ascent cautiously after symptom relief, monitoring for recurrence.
What are the risks and complications?
1. High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE): Fluid accumulation in the lungs, causing breathing difficulties.
2. High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE): Swelling of the brain, leading to confusion, coordination problems, and potentially coma or death.
3. Severe dehydration due to increased respiratory rate and decreased thirst sensation.
4. Hypothermia due to exposure to cold temperatures at high altitudes.
5. Reduced physical and cognitive performance, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries.
6. Exacerbation of pre-existing medical conditions such as heart or lung diseases.
