Period delay refers to the intentional postponement of a woman’s menstrual period, typically for convenience during events such as holidays, weddings, sporting competitions, or exams. It is a safe and widely used method to manage menstruation when bleeding would be inconvenient or disruptive. Period delay is usually achieved through hormonal medication that temporarily alters the natural menstrual cycle by maintaining higher levels of progesterone, the hormone responsible for regulating the shedding of the uterine lining. This delay does not stop the cycle altogether but simply shifts the timing of the next period. Once the course of medication is stopped, hormone levels drop, and a withdrawal bleed typically occurs within a few days.

The most common treatment for period delay in women who are not using hormonal contraception is norethisterone, a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. This is typically prescribed to be taken three times daily, starting around three days before the expected start of the period. As long as the tablets are taken consistently, menstruation will be delayed, and bleeding will usually begin 2 to 3 days after stopping the medication. Norethisterone is generally suitable for women aged 16 and over who are not pregnant or breastfeeding and who have no contraindicating medical conditions such as liver disease, history of blood clots, or hormone-sensitive cancers. Women using the combined oral contraceptive pill can also delay their period by skipping the hormone-free break and starting a new pill pack immediately. It is advisable to consult a pharmacist or GP to determine the safest and most effective method for individual needs, particularly for younger women or those with underlying health issues.

While period delay medication such as norethisterone is usually well tolerated, it can cause some side effects in certain individuals. These may include nausea, headaches, mood changes, breast tenderness, and bloating. More rarely, it may lead to changes in libido, acne, or mild skin irritation. A small number of women may experience more serious side effects such as blood clots, especially if they have other risk factors like smoking, obesity, or a family history of thrombosis. Because norethisterone is a hormone-based medication, it is not suitable for everyone and should only be used under medical supervision. Women with a history of certain conditions, including clotting disorders, migraines with aura, or liver problems, may be advised against using it. Most side effects subside once the medication is stopped and hormone levels return to their natural balance.
