Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when a person travels rapidly across multiple time zones, disrupting the body’s natural circadian rhythm or internal body clock. This rhythm regulates sleep and wake cycles, among other physiological functions, and is synchronised to the local time by environmental cues such as light and darkness. When these cues suddenly change—such as during a long-haul flight—your body struggles to adjust, resulting in a mismatch between your internal clock and the local time at your destination. Jet lag is particularly common when flying eastward, as this shortens the day and makes it harder for the body to adapt. Although it’s not a serious condition, it can significantly affect one’s ability to function normally, especially in the first few days after arrival.

Symptoms of jet lag can vary in severity depending on the number of time zones crossed, the direction of travel, and the individual’s own sleep habits and general health. Common symptoms include difficulty falling asleep at night or waking up too early, excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience irritability, mood changes, gastrointestinal issues such as indigestion or constipation, and a general feeling of malaise. Physical and mental performance may be impaired, which can be particularly problematic for business travellers or athletes. The symptoms typically begin soon after arrival and may last for several days as the body slowly realigns with the local time.

Treating jet lag largely involves helping the body adjust more quickly to the new time zone. Gradually shifting your sleep and wake times to match the destination’s time zone a few days before travel can ease the transition. Upon arrival, exposure to natural light during the day and avoiding bright screens at night can help reset your body clock. Staying hydrated, avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and eating light, balanced meals can also support the body’s adjustment. Short naps may help ease daytime drowsiness, but long naps should be avoided to prevent further sleep disruption. In some cases, melatonin supplements—a hormone naturally produced by the body to signal sleep—may be recommended to help induce sleep in the evening. Melatonin is generally safe for adults and can be considered for children over the age of three, though it should only be used under medical supervision in younger age groups. Sleeping tablets may also be prescribed short-term, but these are not recommended for children and should be used cautiously by adults due to the risk of dependence and side effects.

While lifestyle-based treatments for jet lag are safe and well tolerated, pharmacological options can have side effects. Melatonin supplements may cause drowsiness, dizziness, headaches, or vivid dreams, and in some individuals, they may lead to daytime grogginess if the timing or dosage is incorrect. Although generally considered safe for short-term use, melatonin is not regulated in the same way as prescription medicines, so product quality can vary. Over-the-counter or prescribed sleeping tablets may help with temporary sleep initiation but often carry risks such as morning grogginess, confusion, or even memory issues, particularly in older adults. These medications are not advised for long-term use and are not suitable for children. As such, non-pharmacological approaches (such as light exposure, gradual sleep adjustment, and maintaining a consistent sleep routine) remain the preferred methods of managing jet lag in most cases.
