MMR

Measles, mumps and rubella are viral infections that can cause serious, potentially fatal illnesses. They are highly contagious and spread through coughing and sneezing. As these viruses are present in most countries worldwide, vaccination is recommended for all travellers (particularly those visiting for extended periods) if they have not received two doses as part of the routine childhood immunisation programme.

The MMR vaccine is a combined injection that protects against three serious viral infections: measles, mumps and rubella. These diseases were once common in childhood and often led to serious complications such as meningitis, hearing loss, brain inflammation, and in the case of rubella, severe birth defects when contracted during pregnancy. The vaccine contains weakened forms of the viruses, which are enough to stimulate the immune system and build long-lasting immunity without causing the diseases themselves. It is part of the routine childhood vaccination schedule in the UK and has played a vital role in reducing cases and preventing outbreaks.

Measles, mumps and rubella are all highly contagious and spread through tiny droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes or breathes. The viruses can linger in the air and on surfaces, meaning transmission is possible even without close contact. Prevention relies primarily on vaccination with two doses of the MMR vaccine, which offers high levels of protection against all three illnesses. Maintaining high vaccination rates in the community also helps to prevent the spread of disease through herd immunity. Practising good hygiene and staying away from others when unwell also contributes to reducing the risk of transmission.

Each of the three viruses causes distinct symptoms. Measles usually begins with a high fever, cough, runny nose, and sore eyes, followed by a blotchy red rash that typically starts on the face and spreads. Mumps causes swelling of the glands at the sides of the face and may be accompanied by fever, headache and fatigue. Rubella often presents as a mild illness with a pinkish rash, low-grade fever and swollen glands, though it can be more severe in adults. All three infections can lead to complications, and in some cases, hospitalisation is required. Measles in particular is known for being extremely infectious and potentially very dangerous.

After two doses, the MMR vaccine provides long-lasting protection, often for life. The first dose is given to children at around 12 to 13 months of age, with a second dose offered at three years and four months. These two doses ensure that most people develop full immunity. While immunity may slightly decline over time in rare cases, the vaccine remains highly effective at preventing severe illness and community outbreaks. Adults who are unsure of their vaccination status or who missed out in childhood can still be vaccinated safely at any age.

While the MMR vaccine is routinely given in the UK, it is especially important for those travelling to countries where measles, mumps or rubella are still common. This includes many parts of Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and areas with lower vaccination coverage. Outbreaks can occur anywhere, including in developed countries where vaccine uptake has dropped. Some universities, employers, or travel destinations may require proof of MMR immunisation. Travellers should ensure they are up to date with both doses before visiting areas where there is an increased risk of exposure.

The MMR vaccine is generally very safe and well tolerated. Common side effects include mild swelling or redness at the injection site, a low-grade fever, or a mild rash. Some children may experience temporary joint stiffness or swelling of the glands. Rarely, a small number of individuals may develop a fever high enough to trigger a febrile seizure, though this does not cause long-term harm. Serious allergic reactions are extremely rare. As with any medical treatment, those with specific concerns or a history of allergies should consult their GP or healthcare provider before vaccination. Overall, the benefits of protection from three serious illnesses far outweigh the minimal risk of side effects.
